Art plagiarism by MeckanicalMind Art plagiarism by MeckanicalMind
this is a quick example of a shitty knock off with no credit.

The left Darth maul was done by :iconitmon: and the right Darth Maul was 'done' by :iconcrusaderpl: . Basically the second one is an almost complete attempt at ripping off the original. The lines match up so perfectly in some areas (not completely because i scaled on half-assedly) that you can count the dots indicating the top of his hood in both and they match. Without credit giving this is absolutely discusting and against everything we as artists are for.

Report this sort of thing whenever you see it!

Yeh, looks traced. weird little differences though. But you could argue both traced this [link] because the lines match up perfectly. I dont want to question itmon on this, he is a really cool artist and could be really good at replicating this. But the size of the deviation and this image are similar, and it lines up. Whats to say this artist didnt do the same, and thats why they are similar?

Sure, its he's a thief, but where do you draw the line? If I trace/vector a disney drawing, am I stealing? But if I trace work from dA its a definite conclusion?

Well, I can say first off, I don't trace. I have witnesses who watch me actually work and know what I am capable of. I did use that picture as a reference, but I also own the actual bust and was looking at that as well during the process of making that deviation. [link] As far as if he could have done the same thing? Sure, but the problem is I used a lot of little nuances in my art that he pretty much copied. I can't imagine two artists on the same subject would incorporate the same little nuances, down to the number of stitches on the character's cloak over his forehead. When I first looked at it, I thought, wow, someone drew the same pose and reference, etc.; it was when I looked closely that I realized those little things I had done had been exactly traced. It's one thing that he used my art as a reference; I don't have a problem with that, I mean, hell, the subject is a Lucasfilm property, not mine, I'm not about to try and fight the big boys for something that is not mine and just fan art on my part. If nothing else, my biggest gripe is that I just wasn't listed as that reference he used. I wrote to the guy, he doesn't respond. So I took the next step. We'll see what happens. DA clearly states that it is a proper requirement/etiquette here to list the references you use. I always make a point to do so, and generally even ask for permission to do so before I post the work.

yeh, no doubt he stole it when you put it like that. like there could be a coincidence that you did the same angle etc, but it is the little marks you put in, the highlights, the eyes etc that no way can you replicate. Not even if you copy freehand, the fact that they overlay so similarly is proof. Have you reported it to dA?

The pic i was referring to [link]=pauT66e04yRz0M:&tbnh=128&tbnw=118&;prev=/images%3Fq%3Ddarth%2Bmaul%2B%26start%3D20%26ndsp%3D20%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rls%3DGGGL,GGGL:2006-30,GGGL:en%26sa%3DN looks like the exact match of the deviation, even when the images are overlayed. They aint exactly the same and I guess the statue can be positioned the same.

Well, like I said, along with the actual bust in my hands, I definitely used that photograph as a reference. There's just only so much you can do with a picture reference though, as opposed to having the real deal in your hands to study closer, ya know? Plus I'm blind as a bat so I have to look at things real closely.

And his deviation has been reported to DA. :)

Thanks for backing me up on this. I really appreciate the support here from my fellow artists. Fan art is one thing, but this is another. I wouldn't have any problem with this if he at least gave me the credit for the original art. I drew this from a physical bust for crying out loud. Again, thanks so much for this. I really appreciate it!

Yeah, and I believe its the same guy. Did you file a report? Sorry that it happened to you as well. It takes people like us sticking together to try and spot and stop theft.
